Management of short-sightedness
This is a relatively new area of an optician’s skill set. Short-sightedness can increase the risk of eye disease later in life. Conditions such as Retinal Tears, Retinal Detachment, Glaucoma, Cataract and Myopic Maculopathy have increasing risk with increase in short-sightedness.
Newly designed lenses and contact lenses can slow this process down. If your child is short-sighted, then this may be an option for them depending on the rate of progression. Having a parent with short-sightedness is a risk factor, as well as genetics. Being outdoors for 3 hours a day is a good benchmark for children when trying to maintain good distance vision.
